MT. CARMEL, Illinois - Sophomore right-handed pitchers Brandon Allen, Matt Ellenbest, Spencer Drake and Clay Wallace, along with left-hander Spencer Sapp, rightfielder Garrett Gordon, first baseman Cole Gleason ,shortstop Edgar Figueroa, and catcher James Jewell have decided on where they will continue their education and baseball in 2014.
Brandon Allen (Louisville, KY) will be a Hilltopper at Western Kentucky University in the Sun Belt Conference. This year, Allen went 6-3 with a 3.41 ERA. In 60.2 innings of work, he struck out 44 opponents and walked 16.
Matt Ellenbest (Medina, OH) will take his efforts to Morehead State University of the Ohio Valley Conference and become an Eagle. As a spot-starter and reliever for the Warriors in the 2012 campaign, Ellenbest threw 16.2 innings and posted a 3.78 ERA. He fanned 15 opposing hitters and only walked 4.
Spencer Drake (Louisville, KY) will be pitching in the Big East Conference during the 2013-2014 season for the Cincinnati Bearcats. He led the pitching staff with 98.2 innings pitched, posting a 0.82 ERA and was tied for most wins in the country with an 11-0 record. Drake also tied for leading the nation with 118 strikeouts while only walking 14.
Spencer Sapp (Jasper, IN) recently committed to the University of Ohio in the Mid-America Conference. The southpaw appeared in 31.0 innings, and posted a 3.77 ERA. With both starting and relief opportunities, he struck out 38 hitters and walked 11.
Clay Wallace (Carmel, IN) is headed to the University of Cincinnati of the Big East to become a part of the Bearcats pitching staff. In 58.0 IP as a starter and reliever, Wallace posted a 1.86 ERA, striking out 47 hitters and walking 13.
Garrett Gordon (Saline, MI) has committed to the University of Arkansas in the Southeastern Conference for the 2014 season. Gordon hit in the clean-up spot for the Warriors, finishing with a .315 BA. In 62 games, the right-fielder had 64 H, 13 2B, 4 HR, 40 RBI, .448 SLG, 33 BB, 15 HBP, 21 SB, and an OBP of .439.
Cole Gleason (Mesa, AZ) will be heading south and playing in the Sun Belt Conference next year at the University South Alabama. Gleason hit in the 3-hole all year for the Warriors and led the team in numerous offensive categories. In 60 games, the sophomore posted a .368 batting average, along with 78 H, 24 2B, 9 HR, led the country with 72 RBI, .618 SLG, 36 BB, 26 SB, and an on-base percentage of .457.
Edgar Figueroa (Orlando, FL) recently committed to Purdue University of the Big Ten Conference. Figueroa was known for his consistent defense at shorstop, posting a .963 fielding percentage. In 57 games, the predominantly lead-off hitter had a .357 batting average, with 74 H, 17 2B, 1 HR, and 40 RBI. Figueroa was tied for 3rd in the country with 42 stolen bases.
James Jewell (Batesville, IN) will be wearing gear behind the plate on the Purdue University campus in the Big Ten Conference. Jewell posted a .977 fielding percentage and threw out 33% of runners attempting to steal on him. At the plate, Jewell hit .247, with 19 H, 5 2B and 11 RBI.
