Full strength Warriors win 3rd straight

Wabash Valley College basketball coach Dan Sparks needed only one look at the scorebook to tell what his club had been missing for the first three month of the season.

The book showed Chris Griffin with 21 points, and Phillip Jackson with 19.

"There's 40 points we've been playing without," said Sparks, noting the return of the 6-foot-7 Griffin from an MCL injury which has kept him out all year, and the 6-foot-9 Jackson from a severe ankle sprain which was reinjured as the season began.

With the pair together on the court at last, WVC has suddenly won three games in a row, including Wednesday night's 80-66 win over Shawnee at Spencer Sports Center.

It's almost a new season of sorts now for the Wabash Valley (9-10, 3-5 in GRAC). "We have 10 games left, five on the road and five at home," Sparks said. "I told the guys we've got to try to win out."

Sparks know that with five GRAC losses already, the Warriors are now playing for post-season seedings and momentum. And, there will certainly be plenty of pay-back opportunities along the way, just like it was against Shawnee, a six-point winner over the Warriors (73-67) on Nov. 28, played without Griffin and Jackson.

Against the Saints, WVC pulled away in the second half after only leading by two points, 38-36, at halftime.

"We did a better job on defense, and we didn't turn the ball over as many times in the second half," Sparks said.

Rontray Chavis finished with 14 points for the Warriors, who can get back to the .500 mark with a win at Southwestern on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.

Kil'ron Coleman led Shawnee (11-6) with 18 points. Stanley Malcom added 11, while Jobe Dillard and Jerry Johnson each added 11 points.
