Warriors give solid effort, top Statesmen 98-91

From Staff Reports

ROBINSON — Wabash Valley earned a 98-91 Great Rivers Athletic Conference win at Lincoln Trail on Saturday.

The Warriors (10-7, 3-4), who bounced back from a 75-64 home loss to Lake Lake on Wednesday, received double-digit scoring from Brandon Wolfe (19), Brian Wilson (18), Kasey Elam (17) and Mike Donaldson (13).

"We played with a lot of energy and we played together," WVC coach Mike Carpenter said. "Our team is still a work in progress, but this is a good road win."

Aaron Siler and Darryl Baker had 21 points apiece for the Statesmen (8-9, 2-4).

Wilson scored inside to give Wabash Valley a 76-75 lead and ignite a 16-7 run by the Warriors. Lynch, who stoked WVC's game-sealing explosion with a pair of 3-point shots, hit his final one with less than 4 minutes left as Wabash Valley took an 88-82 lead.

A dunk from Donaldson and a layup from Wilson put the Warriors up by 10 points as 90 seconds remained.

"Lincoln Trail had a good crowd and that made it a tough place to play," Carpenter said. "But we earned a conference win with a good effort."

Wilson helped his effort by hitting 8 of 10 free-throw chances while Wolfe went 5 of 7. Wabash Valley (21 of 33) and Lincoln Trail (21 of 34) were nearly identical at the free-throw line.

WVC had a 45-43 halftime lead as Eric Hopkins knocked down a first-half buzzer-beater. The first 20 minutes, which featured 10 lead changes and five ties, saw the Statesmen go ahead six times.

Wolfe hit three straight 3-point shots in the second half to give the Warriors a 58-46 advantage. He drained four 3-pointers in the game, which featured 19 baskets from behind the arc. Lincoln Trail outscored WVC 30-27 from 3-point range.

Wabash Valley plays a Region 24 game at Shawnee at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
